Gatekeeper & Strengthening School Bus Safety in Canada

Posted on May 3, 2021 by Aaron Warwick

Several days ago I wrote an article on Breakout Investors dealing with Gatekeeper (GKPRF), a video and data solutions provider for public transportation and smart cities, and The American Rescue Plan. The thesis is that the money from this plan going to K-12 school districts will, in part, be used to adopt new technology such as GKPRF offers. Since that article, GKPRF has released two announcements that show significant tailwinds in Canada related to school bus safety and GKPRF’s offerings. These developments seem to be related to the “Strengthening School Bus Safety in Canada” report issued by the Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety.

The first release highlighted a pilot program involving GKPRF and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario. Specifically, GKPRF was selected to provide infraction cameras to help prevent dangerous incidents caused by passing motorists, and 360-degree exterior cameras as a means of better detecting and protecting children and other vulnerable road users around the exterior of the bus. In researching this, I was able to identify that GKPRF was one of two vendors selected for this pilot, and that GKPRF’s product suite is more robust than their competitor can offer. Of course, none of that means GKPRF is guaranteed to win any business, but it gives them a significant advantage.

The second release, from today, announced a new partnership with United Safety, as well as a pilot program with Toronto schools. The goal of this partnership and initiative is to ensure the health and safety of students through various modes of transportation and to help families make informed decisions regarding their transportation choices when accessing education in Toronto. Under the pilot, GKPRF will provide their solutions, while United Safety provides its child safety and air purification solutions. While the pilot is only three buses, there are over 1,800 vehicles used by the district on a daily basis, so the opportunity to expand is large.

Taken together, these two press releases and the two large provinces moving forward on the safety report, show that GKPRF’s opportunities in Canada likely equal their stellar opportunities in the US.

Disclosure: I am long GKPRF and may buy or sell at any time.
